The apt Group, based in Monheim am Rhein, has prepared and published a sustainability report for 2021 for the first time. In this report, the aluminum processing group of companies transparently addresses key economic, environmental and social issues and makes it available on its website. In future, the report will be published annually to document progress in the area of sustainability.
Michael Zint, CEO of the apt Group: “The apt Group also wants to strive for industry leadership in the area of sustainability, which is why we are guided in our actions by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The core of the agenda is the catalog of 17 goals for sustainable development. From now on, everyone can find out about our progress using figures, data and facts in our first sustainability report.”
The sustainability report is published voluntarily by the apt Group. The framework of the Global Reporting Initiative is applied. This makes figures more comparable and covers key economic, environmental and social issues. A team with different backgrounds has been formed within the company to look at the topic from different angles and drive it forward.
“We are constantly receiving inquiries from customers who want to find out about certain sustainability aspects of our group of companies or our products,” says Felix Watermeyer, Marketing Manager and Sustainability Officer. “Now this information is available to everyone in one place on our website.”
The apt Group’s sustainability journey began early in its history. Almost 40 years ago, it set up its own remelting plant to recycle aluminum process scrap internally. Last year, it celebrated its 50th anniversary, which underlines its forward-looking approach. In addition, the Group calculated its carbon footprint for profile production for the first time last year and had it certified by TÜV.
The Group will continue to focus on sustainability in the future. “Every project we initiate is checked for sustainability and approved if the corresponding targets are met,” says Michael Zint. “In addition, we have also had the carbon footprint (from Scope 1 to Scope 3) of our extrusion sites certified for our transparency. We are well below the current industry average. As a major next milestone, we want to reduce our input material, which accounts for around 91% of our CO₂ footprint, to a value of 4t CO₂/t aluminum or lower.”
