Aluminium Solutions for Battery housings and Battery Subassemblies

Electromobility is fundamentally changing vehicle construction in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Battery housings and subassemblies play a central role, as they protect the energy storage systems, contribute to structural stability and safety, and significantly influence the range of modern vehicles due to their lightweight design. apt develops and manufactures aluminium components for battery housings and subassemblies that meet the demanding requirements of OEMs and system suppliers – in both the automotive and transport sectors.

Aluminium in Battery Housings – Lightweight, Robust, Efficient

Aluminium has become the preferred material for battery housings. It offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, is corrosion-resistant, and can be processed with precision. Our aluminium battery housings are designed to reliably absorb mechanical loads, control heat generation during operation, and reduce overall vehicle weight.

In passenger cars, our aluminium solutions are used as battery housings and subassemblies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), tailored to modern vehicle architectures. In the commercial vehicle segment, we produce battery subassemblies for trains and agricultural machinery that must perform reliably under demanding conditions.

Cross-Industry Expertise: Automotive & Transport

apt operates in both worlds. Our battery housings and subassemblies are used in:

  • Electric cars (BEV): structural housings, cooling channels, carrier profiles
  • Truck trailers and semi-trailers: subassemblies for energy storage
  • Buses and special vehicles: battery housings with integrated fastening technology
  • Charging solutions and infrastructure: aluminium components for stationary energy systems

Our experience from diverse projects enables us to implement complex requirements safely–for example, regarding structural stability, efficient heat dissipation, and assembly-friendly design.

Manufacturing Expertise from a Single Source

Our production covers all process steps: from extrusion to machining, surface finishing, and assembly. With four locations in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, we offer high capacities and short delivery routes.

Technologies in use:

  • Extrusion
  • Sawing, drilling, milling
  • Washing and anodizing
  • Bonding, mechanical joining
  • Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) – For Tight and Stable Housings

Especially for battery housings, tight, integral joints are crucial. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a process particularly suited for aluminium and is therefore used by apt specifically for battery components.

Unlike conventional welding methods, FSW does not involve melting. Instead, the material is plasticized by friction and joined under pressure. The result: pore-free, dimensionally accurate, and mechanically strong weld seams – ideal for housings with high tightness requirements.

We utilize FSW, especially in the production of battery housings for BEVs, where controlled heat development and high structural integrity are crucial.

Sustainability – Responsibility Starts in the Plant

At apt, sustainability is not an extra but a part of the process. In our in-house remelting facility, we recycle up to 18,000 tons of aluminium scrap annually and feed it directly back into the production cycle. This reduces the CO₂ footprint of our products and makes a valuable contribution to the circular economy.

Our raw materials are sourced from low-carbon production, and our manufacturing processes are certified to international standards:
